Southern Russia\’s cop hostage crisis ends, no casualties rep

MOSCOW, March 18 (Xinhua) — A hostage crisis at a police station in southern Russia ended on Thursday without casualties.

A middle-aged man walked into the police station in the Frolovo town of Volgograd region at around noon, holding a handbag with wires sticking out.

He held the police chief hostage, demanding a meeting with top Russian officials while threatening to blow up the building, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

An emergency rescue center was immediately established following the incident. Regional police head Alexander Kravchenko arrived at the scene by helicopter and negotiated the man\’s surrender.

No casualties occurred in the incident. Nearby residents have been evacuated.

Information from local police said the man, identified as Martynenko, once served 13 years in prison and had multiple criminal records.

Investigation on the man was currently underway.
