MAN shows great confidence to China’s truck market

MAN Truck and Bus China plans to grow sales in China this year and further expands its market share in the imported premium heavy-duty truck segment.

“We are planning to sell more heavy-duty trucks this year,” said Benny Lim, president of MAN Truck and Bus China.

“The good sales performance boosted our market share in China’s premium heavy-truck market last year. We are confident of growing our market share further in the next few years as there still exists immense untapped potential,” said Lim. He, however, refused to disclose the market share figures.

After witnessing a slowdown in the first half of last year, China’s heavy-duty truck segment has started to recover in the second half and is likely to grow 10 to 15 percent this year.

According to Lim, the government’s huge investments in infrastructure construction would help improve demand for large-displacement and heavy-duty trucks.

“Although the premier heavy-duty truck segment in China is still quite small, it is one of the most competitive and potential markets in the world,” said Lim. “Achieving the sales and market share targets here is going to be a huge challenge for us,” he said.

To achieve the goals, Lim has outlined a three-pronged strategy.

For starters the company will continue to bring Chinese customers the right products, to meet the rising demand for modern logistics, said Lim.

“At the same time, we will expand and upgrade our service network as customers now expect high-quality services, which also needs to be backed up with high quality professionals and experts,” he said.
Commercial vehicles from MAN have been a feature on Chinese roads for many years now, with more than 70 percent of MAN and its Steyr trucks made under license in the country.

Last October, MAN acquired a 25 percent plus one share stake in Sinotruk, the Hong Kong-listed unit of heavy-duty truck maker China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co, for 560 million euros.

MAN will help Sinotruk in making their engines compliant with the Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V standards over next few years through a continuous process of technology transfer.

MAN Truck and Bus China currently sells commercial vehicles and diesel engines, apart from partnering in several bus projects.

With China now the world’s largest auto market, carmakers are eagerly expanding production while eyeing untapped inland markets. Domestic automaker Geely made its bold move earlier than the rest.
The Zhejiang-based private carmaker set up an auto plant in the capital of Gansu province in 2006, which four years later remains the only plant making sedans in all of underdeveloped northwest China.
The factory is about an hour’s drive from downtown, standing out on a vast expanse of moorland with no other buildings nearby. Some say it’s a tree in the desert.
With the support from local authorities, Geely is about to plant more “trees” to create an “oasis”.
Earlier this month the automaker and the local government signed an agreement to bring in 20 to 30 parts suppliers and build the site into an automobile industrial zone, or in their words, “a modern motor city on the loess plateau”.
An Conghui, Geely’s vice-president, said in an interview before the signing ceremony that 12 of its existing parts partners will open shop in Lanzhou to take advantage of Gansu’s raw materials and also help develop local suppliers.
Geely also plans to invest 2 billion yuan ($293 million) and increase production capacity of its Lanzhou plant to 120,000 units per year that will include 100,000 Free Fleet and Gleagle subcompacts as well as 20,000 mid-class Emgrand models.
Nearly 20,000 cars rolled off the production line at the plant last year. An said the capacity will increase to 40,000 units this year and 80,000 to 100,000 units in 2011.
Geely’s chairman Li Shufu admitted the facility has not yet made a profit mainly due to high logistics costs and small production volume. He is confident that bringing in auto parts suppliers and expanding production capacity will greatly reduce costs and make the factory profitable.
Li also noted the initial motive to build the Lanzhou plant was in response to the government’s call for developing western regions.
“Business opportunities usually lie in national strategies,” he said.
The Lanzhou plant is far from the largest of Geely’s nine facilities across China, but its positioning is important. The location in a transportation hub city will play a crucial role in exporting Geely’s cars to Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
The company’s other major export base is the coastal city Ningbo in its home province Zhejiang where most of its shipments to southern countries and regions originate.
Despite tumbling exports in the wake of the global recession last year, Geely is building more overseas plants that will be unveiled soon, according to An. The company now runs production lines in Russia, Ukraine and Indonesia. A Malaysian plant is set to begin operations soon.
An said that the company will reach its goal to produce and sell 2 million cars by 2015 ahead of the schedule. Yet given the stagnant overseas demand, Geely’s blueprint was adjusted to reduce the proportion of exports to one-half of the total sales, down from the original two-thirds.
Rapid development
Geely is riding high these days with sales surging by 48 percent to 330,000 units last year. It purchased the Australian automatic transmission supplier Drivetrain Systems International (DSI) last March. It received wide media exposure in its bid to acquire Volvo, a deal expected to finalize this year.

“The auto industry is like a marathon race – the key is not to run too fast at the beginning,” he said, underscoring Geely’s emphasis on technological innovation and training of professionals.

The State-level award is not about a single patent or design, but the entire system that cultivates more talent and new technologies, said Zhao Fuquan, Geely’s vice-president in charge of research and development.
According to Zhao, the award marks a great leap in Geely’s capacity for innovation after the company strategically switched from merely competing with pricing to making quality cars.
The company now has several self-developed engines and transmissions. It is also working on a second generation of its own tire blowout monitoring and braking system, a major breakthrough in safety control technology.

One of China’s two leading State-owned shipbuilders, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said Sunday that its profit in 2009 jumped 18.5 percent to 7.39 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars).
The Beijing-based conglomerate, which consists nearly 50 industrial subsidiaries and about 30 R&D institutes in northern China, also said its operating income rose 17 percent in 2009 to 120.9 billion yuan.
General manager Li Changyin said the CSIC had overcome the impact of the global financial crisis, which crippled the global sea-based trade and brought down ship orders.
Li said technological innovations had enabled the CSIC to build 180,000-dwt bulkers, 320,000-dwt oil tankers, 13,000-TEU containers as well as new types of drilling platform which can be used in water depths up to 400 feet (120 meters).
According to Li, CSIC had also been actively engaged in non-ship businesses including manufacturing of wind power and nuclear power equipment, accounting for 40 percent of the CSIC’s business volume.
Li said the CSIC profit target for 2010 was 8 billion yuan. The operating income was expected to surpass 140 billion yuan and the CSIC output in 2010 was likely to break 10 million dwt (deadweight tonnage), he added.
The CSIC, which has more than 140,000 manpower, launched an initial public share offer at the Shanghai Stock Exchange in December 2009 and raised some 6.4 billion yuan.
The CSIC’s main shipbuilding and industrial enterprises are based in cities of Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan and Wuchang.
The other major shipbuilding conglomerate in China — the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is based in Shanghai, whose turf is mainly in eastern and southern China.

Luxury carmaker Aston Martin launched its flagship store in Beijing Sunday evening in a push to increase its presence in the premier Asian market.
The store, located at 66 Jinbao Street, Chaoyang District, is more than twice as big as Beijing’s other two Aston Martin stores and is the largest in Asia Pacific. The 500 sq m showroom will display seven of the luxury vehicles each costing roughly 1.3 million yuan.
“(Beijing) is a representation of the history of China, of the life in China, and this is why we are here,” CEO of Aston Martin, Ulrich Bez told METRO Sunday.
Despite the economic recession’s impact on luxury good sales, Bez said Aston Martin continues to expand worldwide and the Asia market is one of the fastest growing.
“Whatever the situation is in the economy if you have a great product, you will be successful and if you have a bad product you will suffer,” he said.

The decision to open the new store was heavily influenced by the upcoming Spring Festival celebrations, said Matthew Bennett, regional director for Aston Martin Asia-Pacific.
Some markets come alive at different times of the year. This time of year is when Beijing is at its most lively, said Bennett.
Soon Beijing will be one of the largest markets and they wanted to be well represented here, he said.
“Not to be represented in the main capital of the premier Asian market, which is going to become the premier world market, would be a mistake,” Bennett said.
In addition to the launch of the store, the company unveiled its latest model, Rapide, to the Asian market. A few deposits on the new vehicle were made at the event Sunday, Bennett said.
More than 80 Aston Martin vehicles were sold in China last year, he said, 50 percent of which were sold in Beijing stores.
“(Beijing) has a growing appreciation for luxury goods and an authenticity of a product, that’s what we’ve been seeing,” Bennet said.

对此,财政部在今年年初曾提出“限薪令”的设想,但正式文件迟迟没有下发。7月24日,人社部新闻发言人尹成基曾公开表示,去年以来人社部会同有关部门研究制订规范中央企业负责人薪酬管理的文件,总体上按照“先中央后地方”两步走的要求,着力建立健全央企负责人薪酬分配的激励和约束机制。


8月,人力资源和社会保障部副部长胡晓义也明确表示,中央企业负责人薪酬管理指导意见将严格遵循五条基本原则:市场调节和政府监管相结合,不能错位;激励功能和约束机制相统一,不能偏废;短期的激励和长期的激励相兼顾,不能近视;高管人员的薪酬增长和职工工资的增长相协调,不能悬殊;完善薪酬制度与规范补充保险、职务消费等相配套,不能单一。


而到目前,此项改革政策终于进入实质性阶段。


尹蔚民强调,收入分配制度领域的另一项改革,是2010年全面启动的事业单位绩效工资改革。事业单位实施绩效工资,不是简单的涨工资,而是要同事业单位规范津贴补贴相结合,同建立事业单位工作人员的考核机制相结合,建立一种新的机制和制度。


尹蔚民表示,规范央企负责人薪酬的意见,事业单位的绩效工资制度的实施,都是推动收入分配体制改革的重要举措。针对收入分配领域的问题,相关部门正“循序渐进地、逐步地”解决,旨在建立一个合理有序的收入分配格局。


此外,尹蔚民表示,事业单位实施绩效工资涉及人员多、单位数量多,具体落实“要有一个过程”。


据了解,文件将规范目前国资委监管的136家中央企业,同时囊括财政部监管的20多家金融企业,以及近4000家中央部门(单位)管理的非金融国有及国有控股企业(集团)。
